Overview - Sacramento

Located at the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers, Sacramento is the capital of California. It has approximately 500,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2018. The Sacramento metropolitan area (Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom) comprised 2,345,210 residents as of the 2018 US Census Bureau Estimate.


Sacramento's rapid transit network consists of three light rail services.

Sacramento RT Light Rail

Opened 1987, Sacramento RT Light Rail consists of three light rail services that serve the city of Sacramento, California and the surrounding suburbs.

Blue Line

The Blue Line of the Sacramento RT Light Rail is a light rail service on a North-South alignment, running from Watt/I-80 in the north to Cosumnes River College in the south via Downtown Sacramento and serving 30 stations of which five are served in a single direction only.


The Blue Line began operation its current form in June 2005 with the reconfiguration of the network, and the last extension to the line was the opening of Morrison Creek in September 2021. The Blue Line is operated by the Sacramento Regional Transit District.

Gold Line

The Gold Line of the Sacramento RT Light Rail is a light rail service on an East-West alignment, running from Sacramento Valley in the west to Historic Folsom in the east via Downtown Sacramento and serving 27 stations.


The Gold Line began operation its current form in June 2005 with the reconfiguration of the network, and the last extension to the line was to Sacramento Valley in December 2006. The Gold Line is operated by the Sacramento Regional Transit District.

Green Line

The Green Line of the Sacramento RT Light Rail is a light rail service on a North-South alignment, running from 7th & Richards/Township 9 in the north to 13th Street in the south via Downtown Sacramento and serving 7 stations.


The Green Line began operation in June 2012. The Green Line is operated by the Sacramento Regional Transit District.
