Overview - Santos-São Vicente

Located on São Vicente Island on Santos Bay, Santos and São Vicente are adjacent cities in São Paulo. Santos has approximately 434,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2020. São Vicente has approximately 368,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2020. The Baixada Santista metropolitan area comprised 1,663,085 residents as of the 2010 IBGE census estimate.


The Baixada Santista's rapid transit network consists of a light rail service.

VLT da Baixada Santista

Opened for commercial operations in 2016, the Baixada Santista Light Rail consists of a light rail service that serve the cities of Santos and São Vicente, São Paulo, with plans for extensions within and off of the island.

Line 1 of the VLT da Baixada Santista is a light rail service on an East-West alignment. It runs from Barreiros in the west to Porto in the east, serving 15 stations.


Line 1 was opened for commercial operations in January 2016 and the last extension to the line was to Barreiros and Porto in January 2017. The VLT da Baixada Santista is owned by the Empresa Metropolitana de Transportes Urbanos (EMTU).
