Overview - Auckland

Located on a narrow isthmus on the northern tip of the North Island, Auckland is the largest city by population in New Zealand. It has approximately 1,547,200 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2025. The Auckland metropolitan area comprised 1,794,400 residents as of the 2025 New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings Estimate.


Auckland's rapid transit network consists of three S-Train services and a bus rapid transit line. It also has a regional rail line and BRT-Lite line.

Auckland Transport - Rail

Auckland Transport's rail division consists of three S-Train services and a regional rail service that serve the city of Auckland and the surrounding suburbs.

Eastern Line

The Eastern Line is a S-Train service on a northwest-southeast alignment. It runs from Waitematā in the northwest to Manukau in the southeast, serving 11 stations.


The Eastern Line was opened in November 1930 and the last extension to the line was to Manukau in April 2012.

Southern Line

The Southern Line is a S-Train service on a northwest-southeast alignment. It runs from Waitematā in the northwest to Pukekohe in the southeast, serving 17 stations.


The Southern Line was opened in 1875 and the last expansion to the line was the opening of Parnell in March 2017.

Western Line

The Western Line is a S-Train service on an east-west alignment. It runs from Swanson in the west to Waitematā in the east, serving 17 stations.


The Western Line was opened in February 1880 and the last expansion to the line was the opening of Parnell in March 2017.

Onehunga Line

The Onehunga Line is a regional rail service on a north-south alignment. It runs from Newmarket in the north to Onehunga in the south, serving 7 stations.


The Onehunga Line was reopened in September 2010.

Auckland Transport - Busway

Auckland's busway network consists of a bus rapid transit line and BRT-Lite line that serve the city of Auckland and the surrounding suburbs.

Northern Busway

The Northern Busway is a bus rapid transit line on a north-south alignment. It runs from Albany in the north to Akoranga in the south, serving 5 stations. Trunk services continue off-busway to the Hibiscus Coast in the north and Waitematā in the south.


The Northern Busway was opened in February 2008 and the last extension to the line was to Albany in May 2022.

Eastern Busway

The Eastern Busway is a BRT-Lite line on an east-west alignment. It runs from Panmure in the west to Pakūranga in the east, serving 2 stations.


The Eastern Busway was opened in 2021.
