Overview - San Francisco Bay Area Metropolitan Area

Surrounding the San Francisco Bay, the San Francisco Bay Area Metropolitan Area is a multinodal metropolitan area on the Atlantic coast of the United States, including San José, San Francisco, Oakland, and dozens of other smaller cities (inc. MSA cores Stockton, Modesto, Santa Rosa-Petaluma, Vallejo, Santa Cruz-Watsonville, Merced, and Napa). The San Francisco Bay Area combined statistical area (San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland) comprised 9,714,023 residents as of the 2020 US Census Bureau Estimate.


The Bay Area's higher order transit network, not including those within cities themselves, consists of a cross-bay regional metro network and three commuter rail services.

BART

Opened 1972, BART is a suburban metro network providing regional service to the entire San Francisco Bay Area via five metro services, a regional rail service, and a people mover service.

Orange Line (Richmond-Berryessa)

The BART Orange Line is a metro service on a North-South alignment. It runs from Richmond in the north to Berryessa/North San José in the south via downtown Oakland, serving 21 stations.


The Orange Line was opened in September 1972 and the last extension to the line was in June 2020 when service was extended to Berryessa/North San José. The Orange Line is operated by Bay Area Rapid Transit.

Yellow Line (Pittsburg/Bay Point-SFO)

The BART Yellow Line is a metro service on a North-South alignment. It runs from Pittsburg/Bay Point in the north to San Francisco International Airport in the south via downtown Oakland and downtown San Francisco, serving 28 stations. The eBART extension is branded as part of the Yellow Line.


The Yellow Line was opened in May 1973 and the last adjustment to the line was in February 2020 with the cutback to Millbrae in the south. The Yellow Line is operated by Bay Area Rapid Transit.

eBART (Pittsburg/Bay Point-Antioch)

The eBART (East Contra Costa County BART extension) is a regional rail service on an East-West alignment. It runs from Antioch in the east to Pittsburg/Bay Point in the west, where it connects with the Yellow Line. It is branded as part of the Yellow Line.


eBART was opened in May 2018. eBART is owned and operated by Bay Area Rapid Transit.

Green Line (Berryessa-Daly City)

The BART Green Line is a metro service on an upside down U shaped alignment. It runs from Daly City in the west to Berryessa/North San José in the east via downtown Oakland and downtown San Francisco, serving 21 stations.


The Green Line was opened in August 1974 and the last extension to the line was in June 2020 when service was extended to Berryessa/North San José. The Green Line is operated by Bay Area Rapid Transit.

Red Line (Richmond-Millbrae)

The BART Red Line is a metro service on a North-South alignment. It runs from Richmond in the north to Millbrae and San Francisco International Airport in the south via downtown Oakland and downtown San Francisco, serving 24 stations.


The Red Line was opened in April 1976 and began all day operation in July 1980. The last extension to the line was in June 2003 when service was extended to Millbrae (not including changes to San Francisco International Airport service patterns). The Red Line is operated by Bay Area Rapid Transit.

Blue Line (Dublin/Pleasanton-Daly City)

The BART Blue Line is a metro service on an East-West alignment. It runs from Dublin/Pleasanton in the east to Daly City in the west via downtown Oakland and downtown San Francisco, serving 18 stations. Some trains terminate at Montgomery Street on Sunday.


The Blue Line was opened in May 1997. The last extension to the line was the opening of West Dublin/Pleasanton in February 2011. The Blue Line is operated by Bay Area Rapid Transit.

Beige Line (Coliseum-OAK)

The BART Beige Line is a people mover service on a North-South alignment. It shuttles from Coliseum in the north to Oakland International Airport in the south, serving 2 stations.


The Beige Line was opened in November 2014. The Beige Line is operated by Bay Area Rapid Transit.

Caltrain

Caltrain

Caltrain is a commuter rail service on a North-South alignment. It runs from San Francisco in the north to Gilroy in the south via San José, serving 31 stations including 3 additional ones on certain days. Service between San Jose Diridon and Gilroy is weekday peak hours only.


Caltrain was opened in its current form in 1985.

ACE

ACE

The Altamont Corridor Express is a commuter rail service on an East-West alignment. It runs from Stockton in the east to San José in the west, serving 10 stations. It runs peak hours only, with very limited service on Saturdays and no service on Sundays.


The ACE was opened in its current form in October 1998. The ACE is owned by the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission.

SMART

SMART

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit is a commuter rail service on a North-South alignment. It runs from Sonoma County Airport in the north to Larkspur in the south, serving 12 stations


SMART was opened in June 2017.
