Overview - Edmonton

Located on the North Saskatchewan River, Edmonton is the capital of and second largest city by population in Alberta. It has approximately 1,011,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2021. The Edmonton metropolitan area comprised 1,418,118 residents as of the Canada 2021 Census.


Edmonton's rapid transit network consists of three light rail services.

Edmonton Light Rail Transit

Opened 1978 as the first light rail system in North America, Edmonton's LRT consists of three light rail services that serve the city of Edmonton, Alberta and the surrounding suburbs.

Capital Line

The Edmonton LRT Capital Line is a light rail service on a northeast-southwest alignment. It runs from Clareview in the northeast to Century Park in the southwest via downtown Edmonton, serving 15 stations. Much of its trackage is shared with the Metro Line.


The Capital Line was opened in April 1978 and the last extension to the line was to Century Park in April 2010. The Capital Line is owned and operated by the Edmonton Transit Service.

Metro Line

The Edmonton LRT Metro Line is a light rail service on a north-south alignment. It runs from NAIT/Blatchford Market in the north to Health Sciences/Jubilee in the south via downtown Edmonton, serving 10 stations. Much of its trackage is shared with the Capital Line.


The Metro Line was opened in September 2015 and the last expansion was the relocation of NAIT station to NAIT/Blatchford Market in January 2023. The Metro Line is owned and operated by the Edmonton Transit Service.

Valley Line

The Edmonton LRT Valley Line is a light rail service on a north-south alignment. It runs from 102 Street in the north to Mill Woods in the south, serving 12 stations.


The Valley Line was opened in November 2023. The Valley Line is owned and operated by the Edmonton Transit Service.
